President, Whey-May Shen

Biography

As a registered nurse, nutritionist, and community cancer support devotee, I feel – especially in light of my being a two- time cancer survivor – that my life has been guided by Providence, to share my professional knowledge and life experiences, encourage and counsel persons touched by cancer and/or other health issue.


Education: Fu Jen Catholic University Taiwan; State University of New York at Stony Brook 


Career experiences:  

Years of experience in food & nutrition services working as Clinical dietician, Hospital nutrition department director in Taiwan

Nursing Specialty - extensive Medical/Surgical Nursing experiences especially in Diabetic Care and Oncology Research Nursing; retired from University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center


Community volunteer Services: Co-founder of Light and Salt Cancer Support Network, Herald Cancer Association-Houston, and "Voice of Hope" Cancer Support Choir; continued to actively conduct cancer awareness and cancer support activities in the community.

Role & responsibility:

  1. Serves as the Chief Volunteer of the organization.
  2. Provides leadership to the Board members and sets/revise policy of the organization.
  3. Encourages Board members’ role in strategic planning.
  4. Discusses issues confronting the organization with Board members.
  5. Helps guide and mediate Board actions with respect to organizational priorities and governance concerns.
  6. Reviews with the founders any issues of concern to the Board.
  7. Monitors financial planning and financial reports.
  8. Plays a leading role in fundraising activities.
  9. Evaluates the performance of the effectiveness of the Board members.
  10. Evaluates annually the performance of the organization in achieving its mission.

Vice President, Sherry Huang

Biography

Hello, my name is Hsin- Yi Huang (I go by Sherry also). I am currently working for a home health company as RN case manager, and I have been a nurse for more than 15 years. I have 2 daughters and 1 son. We currently live in Sugar Land, TX. We moved to the U.S in 2004 from Taiwan. 

I am a student studying to be a nurse practitioner at UTMB. My clinical experience areas include emergency medicine, critical care, trauma, home health and nursing management/ administration.

Role & responsibility:

  1. Performs president’s responsibilities when the president cannot be available (see Chair Job Description).
  2. Reports to the President.
  3. Works closely with the president and other Board members.
  4. Participates closely with the pesident to develop and implement organizational plans.
  5. Performs other responsibilities as assigned by the Board.

Secretary, Edna Cheng

Biography

I am a Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner working in Memorial Hermann Southwest MICU. I have extensive ICU experiences especially in CV surgeries, ECMO, LVADs, & internal medicine. I also have years of experience in nursing education in academia as well as in hospital.

Role & responsibility:

  1. Maintains records of the board and ensures effective management of organization's records.
  2. Manages minutes of board meetings.
  3. Ensures minutes are distributed to members shortly after each meeting.

Treasurer, Peggy Liang

Biography

I am a case manager working in Amerigroup Government Business Department. After graduating with RN in 2010, I worked years in long term care facility. Majority of my clients are the ones who have Medicaid and require assistance with ADL's.

Role & responsibility

  1. Manages finances of the organization.
  2. Administrates fiscal matters of the organization.
  3. Provides annual budget to the board for members' approval.
  4. Ensures development and board review of financial policies and procedures.
  5. Develops and maintains annual financial report and report to the Board annually.

Activity Coordinator, Susan Kim Tek

Biography

I am married and have an 18 year old daughter. I graduated from Sao-Paulo, Brazil. I have a RN-BSN degree and CVRN certification. I have worked as a nurse in United States of America for 20 years. I have worked at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital in Kansas City; now, I currently work at Memorial Hermann as a non-invasive nurse and educator. Besides that, I also help pre-admission(HVI).

Role & responsibility

  1. Plans, schedules, implements and evaluates a program of the organization based on the need of the organization and the community.
  2. Coordinates and participates in activities designed to promote social and professional interaction among members and to promote nursing and health awareness in the community.
  3. Develops calendar of planned activities.
  4. Responsible for contacting members to attend organizational activities and volunteering opportunities.

Public Relation/Marketing, Ann Benson

Biography
My name is Ann Benson, married, with two adult children; my son got married last year, lives with his wife in the Houston area. My daughter works in California. I was born in Taiwan and received my nursing degree in Taiwan.
My working experiences are:
Michigan(1982-1987): nurse at long term care facility
California(1988-1991): nurse at long term care facility
Idaho(1991-2008): charge nurse, case manager and MDS coordinator at long term care facility floor nurse, charge nurse at Hospital dialysis nurse for University of Utah
Texas(2008-2012): case manager at home health services
         (2012-present): case coordinator, marketing at home health services
                                   field supervisor at provider services

Role & responsibility

  1. Responsible for coordinating all aspects of the organization’s publications and communications process in consultation with president and vice presidents.
  2. Creates and edits a variety of department-generated publications and reports including, but not limited to, technical assistance briefs/bulletins, fact sheets, press releases, presentations, newsletter, journal, and other articles and reports.
  3. Creates and manages the organization’s plan and timeline for producing/reproducing new/existing publications, reports, and communications efforts.
  4. Serves as organizational liaison for publications-related projects. Serves as representative with external partners, outside vendors (e.g., graphic designers and printers), and community.

5.  Coordinates and produces content for department’s section of the CNAH Web site, blogs, listservs, and social media networks..

Role & responsibility of All Board Members

  1. Regularly attends board meetings and important related meetings.
  2. Makes serious commitment to participate actively in committee work.
  3.  Volunteers for and willingly accepts assignments and completes them thoroughly and on time.
  4. Stays informed about committee matters, prepares themselves well for meetings, and reviews and comments on minutes and reports.
  5. Gets to know other committee members and builds a collegial working relationship that contributes to consensus.
  6. Is an active participant in the committee's annual evaluation and planning efforts.
  7. Participates in fund raising for the organization.
